Abstract

Paving block is one of the construction materials widely used as a surface covering and pavement material, such as sidewalks, residential roads, parks, yards, and parking areas. The increasing demand for paving blocks has led to higher use of sand as fine aggregate, which may contribute to excessive exploitation of natural resources. One alternative to reduce sand consumption is the utilization of shell waste as a partial substitute for fine aggregate. This article aims to examine the utilization of shell waste as a fine aggregate substitute in paving block production based on a literature review. The method used is qualitative with a literature review approach through content analysis of relevant previous studies. The results show that shell waste has potential as a fine aggregate substitute due to its hard texture, calcium carbonate content, and lime compounds that can support paving block characteristics. Several studies indicate that the use of shell waste in certain proportions can increase compressive strength, reduce water absorption, and still meet the requirements of SNI 03-0691-1996. However, excessive use of shell waste may reduce paving block quality because it affects density and particle bonding. Therefore, shell waste can be utilized as an environmentally friendly alternative material in paving block production with the appropriate mixture proportion.
