Abstract

This literature review examines ten studies conducted in various urban areas across Indonesia to analyze the relationship between traffic volume and environmental noise levels. The findings consistently show that the increasing number of motorized vehicles significantly contributes to elevated traffic noise levels, often exceeding the permissible noise thresholds set by the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 48 of 1996. Traffic noise particularly affects sensitive areas such as schools, hospitals, and residential neighborhoods. The primary observational units used in the analyses include noise levels (dB), vehicle volume (smp/hour), vehicle speed, and surrounding land use characteristics. Most studies employed Sound Level Meters, equivalent noise level (Leq) calculations, linear regression, and the CoRTN (Calculation of Road Traffic Noise) method to assess the correlation between traffic activity and noise. The results underscore the urgent need for mitigation strategies such as vegetation buffers, sound barriers, and spatial planning regulations. Therefore, local governments and urban planners are encouraged to integrate noise management into transportation and urban development policies to improve environmental quality and public health
