Abstract
Flooding in urban areas remains a challenge, exacerbated by land use change and inadequate drainage systems. This study conducted a literature review to evaluate the performance, limitations, and improvement strategies of drainage systems in stormwater management. Using qualitative methods, ten research articles from 2016 to 2024 were analyzed to identify key issues such as drainage capacity, surface runoff impacts, and sustainable alternatives. The findings highlighted existing difficulties in the drainage system, especially undersized channels, sedimentation and improper waste disposal. Advanced hydrological tools, including HEC-RAS and SWMM, demonstrated effectiveness in simulating drainage capacity and proposing optimized designs. Recommendations emphasize redesigning channel dimensions to meet projected flood discharges, incorporating green infrastructure such as infiltration ponds and biopores, and increasing community awareness of waste management. This study underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between policymakers, engineers and communities to develop adaptive and sustainable drainage solutions that can mitigate urban flooding while enhancing ecosystem resilience.
