This research aims to analyze the influence of holding time during the induction heating process on the mechanical properties and microstructure of SUP9 steel. SUP9 steel is a spring steel widely used in automotive and industrial applications due to its combination of hardness and toughness. The induction heating process offers the advantages of rapid and concentrated heating, but variations in holding time after reaching the austenitizing temperature can significantly impact phase formation and grain growth. In this study, SUP9 steel specimens were inductively heated to a specific austenitizing temperature and held for 0 seconds, 5 minute, 10 minute, dan 15 minute before cooling. After heat treatment, Vickers hardness, tensile strength, Charpy impact toughness tests were conducted, along with microstructural observation using an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate that increasing the holding time tends to cause an increase in austenite grain size, which subsequently affects the size and distribution of the martensite phase after cooling. The correlation between holding time and the mechanical properties and microstructural changes will be discussed in detail, providing important insights for optimizing induction heating process parameters in the production of SUP9 steel components.
