The chemical industry's consistent growth necessitates increased quantities of raw and secondary materials, with sulfuric acid being a vital component in various applications such as phosphoric acid production, fertilizers, detergents, pharmaceuticals, laboratory reagents, and water treatment. As sulfuric acid is highly corrosive, selecting appropriate corrosion-resistant materials is crucial. This study aimed to assess corrosion rates in sulfuric acid solutions for ASTM A283 Grade A carbon steel, AISI 304L, and AISI 316L stainless steel. ASTM A283 Grade A, AISI 304L, and AISI 316L specimens were immersed in 98% and 37% sulfuric acid solutions for 27 days, and corrosion rates were determined using the weight loss method. Results revealed the highest corrosion rates in 98% and 37% sulfuric acid for ASTM A283 Grade A steel, measuring 29.68 mpy and 1191.06 mpy, respectively. In contrast, AISI 316L exhibited the lowest corrosion rates, at 1.91 mpy and 814.61 mpy. Uniform corrosion, characterized by surface color changes and area reduction, occurred in all specimens. The concentration of sulfuric acid significantly influenced steel corrosion rates, with solubility of the FeSO4 film layer being a key factor. Lower solubility values conferred higher corrosion resistance, while higher values indicated lower resistance.
